Plant Cell Biology
What is the function of the vacuole in a plant cell?
The vacuole maintains turgor pressure, stores water and nutrients, and helps regulate cell volume. In mature cells it can occupy up to 90% of the cell.
Why this matters
Turgor pressure is what keeps non-woody plants upright — understanding it explains wilting, cell expansion, and stomatal movement.
Plant Nutrition
Name the three primary macronutrients essential for plant growth.
Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K). Nitrogen drives leafy growth, phosphorus root development, and potassium overall vigour and disease resistance.
Why this matters
These three appear on every fertiliser label as N:P:K — knowing what each does lets you diagnose deficiencies from leaf symptoms alone.

A gardener notices yellowing leaves on their roses, starting with the oldest growth first. What is the most likely cause?
Nitrogen deficiency. Nitrogen is mobile in the plant, so deficiency symptoms appear first in older leaves as the plant redirects its reserves to new growth.

Why I'm building this.
In her previous season of life my wife, Roo, was a chef. After our daughter Inara was born, she left catering and started retraining as a gardener. The RHS Level 2 course was the natural first step.
She found it hard going. Not because the subject was beyond her, but because of the structure of the course material. Giant ring binders of dense text are a difficult format to learn from at the best of times, let alone when she was tired, time-poor, and trying to fit study into the gaps between parenting.
I'm a product designer and app developer. My previous app, Pennies, won Apple Editors' Choice in multiple countries and reached over two million downloads. Making things that are beautiful and simple to use is what I do; so building something to help felt like the obvious next step.
GrowDay started as something I was building for Roo; I wanted her to be able to pick up the course in ten minutes between the rest of life. It's grown from there into something I want to give to everyone interested in horticulture.

Is GrowDay official RHS material?
GrowDay is independent. The content is written against the official RHS Level 2 syllabus and assessment objectives, but we have no affiliation with the RHS.
What devices does it work on?
iPhone first, with Android support to follow.
When does it launch?
We are aiming for early access later this year. Sign up above and we will let you know.
How much will it cost?
We have not set pricing yet, but it will likely be something flexible that works with your schedule. We'll be working with early waitlist members to understand the pricing structure that best works for you.
Do I need the official course materials?
GrowDay is a supplement to the official RHS course, not a replacement for it. We recommend signing up for the qualification and having the course materials alongside the app. You can find details on the RHS website.
